Shannon Adams, Sheila Haynes team up to take the crown at the 2024 Mississippi Women’s Four-Ball Championship
August 29, 2024
PEARL, Miss. — Two Mississippi golf legends teamed up once again to take yet another crown.
Shannon Adams and Sheila Haynes are two of the best women’s players in Mississippi state history. With 11 Player of the Year honors (Senior, Super-Senior & Regular) to their names since the Men’s and Women’s Golf Association merger in 2018, both Adams and Haynes were likely favorites at the 2024 Mississippi Women’s Four-Ball hosted by Patrick Farms Golf Club.
In Wednesday’s first round, the team was carried by Adams who carded a trio of birdies on holes 12 through 14. Capping the round off with another birdie on the par 5 18th, Adams and Haynes took a one-stroke lead ahead of the final round.
With defending Senior Women’s Player of the Year, Paige Phillips and partner April Lee hot on their heels, the stage was set for a star-studded final group.
Lee and Phillips got out of the gates quickly, making birdie on the par 5, 1st hole. Staying bogey-free on the front nine, they took a two-shot advantage into the back nine over Adams and Haynes.
Needing to make a move, Adams and Haynes got back into red numbers with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12. Seeing Phillips and Lee go birdie/bogey on holes 12 and 13, the final group was tied with just 5 holes to play.
Matching pars over the next three holes, the tie was broken on the par 4 17th. Adams and Haynes re-took the lead with a birdie on 17, sliding back into where the day began—one shot ahead of Lee and Phillips.
Not going down without a fight, Lee drained a 50-foot putt for par on 18 to force Adams and Haynes to cover for the win. Doing just that, Adams and Haynes took the 2024 Women’s Four-Ball Championship with a 3 under, 141 performance. They tallied nine birdies over 36 holes with five of them coming off of Haynes’ ball.
Using the win as a platform for women’s golf in the state of Mississippi, Sheila Haynes had this to say following the victory:
“I think some of the women that have a higher handicap are scared to play in the State events and they shouldn’t be,” she said. “There’s flights for everybody and that’s what we’re trying to get more and more of the women that play in scrambles, but won’t play in the bigger tournaments. They’re [MGA Championships] fun, we have a fun group and whatever you shoot, you’re going to be in the right flight.”
